a new situation. >> for all the talk about u.s. troop moves under president obama, doubling down in afghanistan. >> it is in our vital national interest to send an additional 30,000 u.s. troops to afghanistan. >> winding down and eventually ending the war in iraq. >> now, it's time to turn the page. >> certainly, his first term and perhaps his entire presidency will be remembered for one night. >> tonight, i can report to the american people and to the world that the united states has conducted an operation that kill ed osama bin laden. >> he escaped the problem that democrats have been since vietnam is become weak on national security. exhibit "a" is killing osama bin laden. >> the truth is, it's our seal who is did it and both the bush and the obama administration deserves credit. but it happened under the president's watch. >> i wanted to present with you a little gift which represents what president obama and vice-president biden and i have been saying, we want to reset our relationship. >> the much touted u.s. reset with russia never seemed to materialize. after president ob

, and i don't know how you prevent a war unless you talk to both sides. >> that's what candidate obama said in 2008. these two men are very much in sync. i'm not the first to say this, this is really a band of brothers. the president, vice president biden, john kerry secretary of state is and chuck hagel, if they're all confirmed, they all served together on the senate foreign relations committee. so they really know each other, and they are in sync in a way that i don't think we've seen a team like this before. this isn't a team of rivals. >> beginning to sound like good ol' boys. by the way, where are the women in this administration forth coming? >> hillary is gone. >> there's valerie, john. leave it alone. >> solis is leaving. >> can i finish? >> yeah. >> hillary is gone. all the other jobs were occupied by white man. i don't think this president feels the compulsion to look like a benatante. if the republicans want to argue that the president's cabinet isn't diverse enough, have at it. >> did you see the group with obama with the sleeves rolled up? they were all boys. out of 14 or

obama promises that no one's talking about taking away your hunting rifle or your self-defense handgun, it matters that gun control activists may, in fact, be talking about taking away your hunting rifle or your self-defense handgun, whether they know it or not. so let's forgo the arbitrary, ambiguous, fearmongering terms and get real specific about what we actually mean by gun control. it may be politically effective to rail against rapid fire, high capacity, assault weapons. doesn't actually mean anything. so if we're serious, we should at least start by getting the terms right. okay. that does it for "the cycle." martin, it's all yours. >> just a quick question. how many rounds did jared loughner fire off before he was tackled? >> what's your point? >> how many rounds had he fired off? >> i'm not sure. i don't remember. >> 31. >> okay. >> he was actually tackled because he was reloading. >> we should be trying to stop crazy people and criminals, martin, from shooting one person, not ten-plus one person which all is accomplished when you ban high capacity magazines. that's all that's

is shucking and jiving. that's a racial era slave term. >> powell is most likely talking about former alaska governor sarah palin who blasted president obama for his handling of the benghazi consulate attack on facebook writing in part, "why the lies? why the cover up? why the dissembling about the cause of the murder of our ambassador? on the anniversary of the worst terror attacks on american soil. we deserve answers to this. president obama's shuck and jive shtick with these benghazi lies must end." joining me now cnn contributor and senior writer for cnn.com, gra l.z. granderson. and will cain. palin defended the remarks saying there was nothing racist about them. was there? >> i'm going to go with no, carol. you know this is always my favorite segment. why are republicans racist? are you racist? tell me again what is not racist about conservatism? it's always the burden of proof to prove you're not a racist, which is a near impossible thing to do. i understand you're not asking me about my personal views. you're asking about a party. i don't know, whatever that is, tens of millions of p

and how to do it in a creative way. >> you know, bill, i'm curious, people have talked a lot about president obama as a gifted speaker which, of course, he is. but then people say, well, that first inauguration speech was not his best moment. he tried to do a whole lot of different things. people say look, he tried to do so many different things that there wasn't that sort of one-lime memory that people get sometimes from inaugurals. will this one be different? more specific in more targeted? >> i think that people in this media environment really want to be able to pull a sound bite out and say this is the thing we are going to hang this whole speech on. this is what's going to define whether or not it's a great speech. and i think that the president, which we knew from the beginning of the last campaign, speaks in paragraphs, not in sound bites. you know, for better or for worse in some of the debates. i think this speech is going to be about talking directly with the american people about what is this moment and how can we actually still make progress even though the politics in

've been here for four years, serving in the obama administration. but let me ask you about the fact that we've been talking about that the president appointed veterans from wars, war veterans, john kerry, chuck hagel, to his second term cabinet. and yet it is interesting how the diminishing number of combat veterans in the united states congress, you're among the new ones, but believe it or not, there's a diminishing number of those members of congress who have served. how important do you think it is to have more combat veterans serve in the u.s. congress? >> i think it's very important that we have more combat veterans serving in the congress, on both sides of the aisle. i do think that that shared experience will allow us to work with one another and hopefully cooperate. and, you know, one of the things about being in the military, it's all about the mission. it's not about you or your personal ideologies. it's about getting the mission done. so i hope that in this next congress, i will certainly be able to reach out to my fellow iraqs and afghanistan vets, as well as the previou
